Visit of Belarusian television crew to New Zealand Print E-mail

Prior Group has been very pleased to host a visit by a Belarusian delegation representing Stolichnoe TV in Wellington from 20-24 June 2014.

The delegation, led by Mr Yury Kaziyatka, Senator and General Director of the STV, had a very busy and productive time while they were in Wellington. Although it was the middle of winter and the weather conditions were not reliable, they were able to familiarise themselves with the City and to meet and talk to many local residents.

A principal meeting and interview took place with Hon Jim Sutton, a former New Zealand Minister of Agriculture and of Foreign Trade. Mr Sutton provided a comprehensive briefing on New Zealand’s international trade activities, and expressed strong support for cooperation between New Zealand and Belarus, especially in the agricultural sector.  He saw excellent prospects for cooperation in third country markets, such as Russia (for New Zealand) and China (for Belarus).

In talking to Mr Kaziyatka Mr Stuart Prior, Chairman of Prior Group and Honourary Consul for Belarus in New Zealand, noted that there are excellent prospects for the sale of Belarusian tractors and other equipment in New Zealand. This equipment is of interest to New Zealand farmers. It is also of interest to Asian businessmen who buy second-hand tractors and other equipment in New Zealand. New Zealand and Belarus could work together to expand Belarus sales in the Asia/Pacific region. For this, Belarus representatives should be present in New Zealand. Major agricultural fairs in New Zealand represent an important opportunity to draw attention to Belarus goods and services.

There is also potential for New Zealand businesses to advertise their goods and services by participation in fairs and projects in the Republic of Belarus.

Mr Prior discussed with Mr Kaziyatka the potential for cooperation in the area of science, particularly atmospheric physics and climate science. This is of interest to both our countries because of the importance of understanding climate changes for our agricultural sectors.

Antarctic is also an area of common interest to our countries. Mr Prior said that New Zealand had already supported the construction by Belarus of a permanent station in Antarctica and welcomed this development.  We look forward to exchanging experience with Belarus Antarctic colleagues in the years ahead.

One aspect of scientific cooperation concerns Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Mr Prior noted that New Zealand is developing some international scientific projects for this region and that we would like Belarusian scientists, including young scientists, to be involved.
